PLTW is a National Curriculum. Northwest currently has Engineering & Biomedical Sciences offered at Northwest. Mr Paige teaches the Engineering Program and Mrs McNeel teaches the Biomedical Sciences.
The Biomedical Sciences is composed of four classes - which must be taken in order. You must successfully pass the previous semester to continue in the class; and you must successfully pass the previous year to continue on into the next year. Successful passing for PLTW is considered at least a grade of a C.
The Biomedical Science Courses are: Year 1 - Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS) This is the first year of the program. This course is a mixture of biology, chemistry, phyisics, and a little microbiology; plus LOTS of critical thinking. Students are introduced to the PLTW process and some very specific methods of doing things - this includes writing career journals, presenting career journals, writing lab reports, desigining & carrying out experiments. Students are introduced to a variety of software applications and also specific hardware utilized in the PLTW courses. Students learn to analyze data collected by the Logger Pro programs and they even design & carry out an experiment with the Logger Pro hardware.
Year 2 - Human Body Systems (HBS) This is the second year of the program. Students investigate the different body systems and their interactions with each other and disease processes. Students continue the application of designing & developing experiments, creating and explaining how different parts of the body systems function.
Year 3 - Medical Interventions (MI) This is year three. Students continue with the PLTW process, but this year is focused on medical interventions used to help in the treatment of medical illnesses/diseases. Students debate the effectiveness of different interventions and they even design and make a prototype of a prosthetic.
Year 4 - Biomedical Innovations (BI) This is the fourth and final year in the Biomedical Sciences Program. BI is considered the capstone course. The students take everything they have learned in the previous courses and apply to this course.
